Michelle hates being single, despite the many benefits. We investigate why.

Pictured above: the Boyfriend Pillow. There was a time, not so long ago, when Elah seriously considered investing in one of these handy little suckers.

I didn’t do the best job of selling the single life, but take a look at “How to Be Alone” by Andrea Dorfman and Tanya Davis. It’ll make you feel full and excited about aloneness.

  1. This podcast made me really sad…. i saw no advantages on being single at all. It is a very hard time and sort of mean… the dating game, the rejections, the clubbing part is terrible. Online dating is like hell… :( How can a person be single for more than a year and still have some love in their heart, if they have to go through this harsh time…

  2. It was a really sad episode… Michelle was feeling especially sad when we spoke, and I understand why. There were times when I found being single really depressing, and online dating was soul-destroying. But for me, I found that when I stopped actively search for love, I felt pretty great. I focused on other things I enjoyed and really appreciated having all the time I needed to do them. I had more time for my friends. Being single might not be for everyone, but it can be pretty wonderful for some of us. But we didn’t really show that in this episode. We definitely need to interview a happy singleton soon.

  3. Michelle from the episode here. Elah is right, I was really sad when we did that interview. I am less sad now, and still single, nothing has changed, maybe just pulled myself up a little. I also realized I do like spending time alone. It’s great to go home and have no expectations of you. I can eat kraft dinner, watch tv for hours and not feel guilty! (wait. is that also depressing?) I also save A LOT of money. I was going broke with my last girlfriend, with all the fancy dinners and expensive bottles of wine… So there’s a few positives of being single. And really, I do feel much better since the interview.

  4. Hey! that’s very nice to hear from you both! I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better Michelle.

I guess I was not on my best day also when I listened to the episode. I have been single for more than a year now, I moved out to another city, I don’t know many people here and people I know back in my hometown are all dating or in perfect type of relationship. Well, well.. I guess I’m not living in the best or easiest time in my life. I said the episode was sad, because it really talked about the things i feel sad about on this situation. But for sure today I go a lot more to the gym, I’m running marathons, I took the photograph workshop I always wanted to. I can fill up my time with anything I want. Anything but companionship.
